Things I'm proud of... |
|
My name is Julia Lemus, and I was born in Porterville, California, on June 9, 1999. I have lived in Lindsay my whole life, and as a result, I have attended only Lindsay schools, starting in Washington Elementary and then moving on to Lindsay High School in August 2013. Living in Lindsay has been an experience that has affected my whole life, as the familiar culture I grew up in with my friends and family may seem unique to those who have not lived in Lindsay. The people in this town usually know each other, and it is not out of the ordinary to go to a store and speak Spanish. In fact, mostly everybody's native language is Spanish, including mine. This is what makes my story so familiar to Lindsay and so unique to the rest of the world.
I grew up in a small house in Lindsay with my mom, dad, and sister Giselle, who is five years older than me. Until I entered Kindergarten in 2004, I did not know English. The only one who knew some English was my sister, who helped me when I started school. However, my sister and I were not that close when we were younger, probably because we were far apart in age. As the years passed and we moved to a new house, my sister and I bonded over the fact that we would have a new member of the family. On August 2, 2010, my brother Johann was born, and his birth brought our family closer together. Despite the huge age gaps between my siblings and I, we learned to have a good relationship through my brother. Seeing him go through the same language struggles and triumphs that we went through show us that we all go through the same thing, but we go through it differently. At this point, my sister is now an adult and my brother has completed his Kindergarten year. With my graduation coming on June 2017, I am glad to know that I have a close family to come home to if I ever need to.
Looking back at my life, it seems uneventful, but when I remember the little things that have happened, I realize that my life has been impacted with every choice I make. Growing up with parents that gave everything up in Mexico to come here is the usual story here in Lindsay. But no matter how repeated that story is to my community, to me, that story is something I see as an inspiration and a reason to continue forward. My parents have not stopped working to give us a life that they could have only dreamed of, which is something I see as selfless. With their struggles in my mind, I will continue strong into my last year of high school and I will continue my education onto college. I am not sure of what I will study yet, but having the privilege to go to college is enough to motivate me to find something I like and graduate with a degree in it. I can't wait to see what the next few years bring, in the meanwhile, I'll be preparing myself for my future.
